What decides your case

What does Portugal still tax after you leave? Rent from a Portuguese property is declared in a Portuguese return each year, and a sale is declared in the non-resident return for the year it takes place.
How is your exit year taxed? Once your Portuguese tax residence ends, Portugal generally taxes only Portuguese-source income. We establish the end date and check whether the exit-year rules keep you resident for the whole year.
Do your obligations to respond to Portuguese tax notices continue after you leave Portugal? The tax authority's notices, and the deadlines they set, continue after you leave Portugal.
Can you use the former-residents regime if you come back? You may qualify for the former-residents regime if you were resident in Portugal before but not in any of the five calendar years before returning, and your tax affairs are in order. Under current law, your residence in Portugal must start again by 31 December 2026.

What clients say

Always explaining the challenges but also taking the next step towards solution.
