IFICI is open to people who become tax resident in Portugal after five non-resident years and carry on an eligible activity. Current and former NHR beneficiaries, anyone who opted for the Programa Regressar former-residents regime and anyone who has already used IFICI are excluded.

If you become tax resident in Portugal in 2026, the IFICI registration deadline is 15 January 2027; a later registration takes effect only from the year in which it is made, for the remaining years of the ten-year period.

## IFICI in 2026: who qualifies and the key deadlines

IFICI is Portugal’s tax incentive for new residents who meet its professional or activity requirements.

Next step

We check whether you qualify for IFICI, prepare the evidence file and make your registration request by the deadline, on its own or as part of your move.

## The deadline logic

As a rule, registration is due on or before 15 January of the year after you become Portuguese tax resident. For 2025 arrivals the deadline was 15 January 2026, and the first cycle, covering 2024 arrivals, had a one-off transitional deadline of 31 March 2025.

Missing the window does not just delay the benefit. The ten-year period still counts from the year you became resident and does not restart, so the years before the registration year are lost: for example, someone who became resident in 2025 and registers late, during 2026, can use IFICI from 2026 to 2034. The qualifying activity and income conditions continue to apply during the benefit years.

## Who actually qualifies

IFICI is activity-based, not lifestyle-based.

- Defined higher-value professions and roles in companies meeting specific criteria
- Scientific research and innovation activity
- Certified startups

The seven statutory routes use different tests: profession, activity, employer or entity status, and certification. CAE codes apply to specified routes rather than every application. Our guide to [IFICI qualifying sectors](/guides/ifici-qualifying-sectors-cae-codes/) and CAE codes explains the relevant mapping.

## If you still have NHR

IFICI excludes people who benefit, or have benefited, from NHR. It is therefore not a switch to extend an existing NHR period. IFICI also excludes anyone who opted for the Programa Regressar former-residents regime, and the same person can use it only once.

Eligible NHR holders retain their remaining term under the applicable transitional rules and must apply the correct annual income treatment. For overlapping pending applications, AT guidance distinguishes approval of IFICI from merely submitting an application: approval can terminate pending NHR registration proceedings.

## The mistakes we keep seeing

- Assuming IFICI is automatic once you have a NIF and an address.
- Registering with an activity description that does not match the qualifying lists.
- Becoming resident months earlier than planned, through the 183-day rule or a habitual home, and only noticing when the deadline maths no longer works.
- Claiming the regime on the return without the registration behind it.

## Frequently asked questions
